C. japonica are the most widely grown of the camellias with a large range of cultivars and many flower colour and type. Generally Japonica leaves are larger and more round than that of the Sasanquas and have a larger and more complex flower structure. Japonicas generally require more a protected position and flower during winter and early spring depending in variety.
